Shaggy 出生於牙買加京士頓市，他小時候被朋友仔以著名電視卡通《Scooby Doo》主角無膽狗 Scooby 的傻佬主人 Shaggy 來為他改花名。18歲時，他從牙買加移居往紐約布克林區。此后他便專注於其音樂事業發展，曾推出過〈Mampie〉和〈Big Up〉等 reggae 榜 hit歌。1988年，Shaggy 加入美國海軍，更曾在海灣戰爭中服役。

 

退伍后的 Shaggy 在 1993年推出首張大碟《Pure Pleasure》，迅速獲得樂迷的注意，其中一首 single〈Oh Carolina〉更成為英國流行樂史上其中一首最受歡迎的勁歌。1995年推出大碟《Boombastic》，更在美國取得佳績，成為 1995年格林美獎最佳 reggae 大碟。此后 Shaggy 星運漸隆，更獲邀為《生死時速2》、《暴劫快車》等影片創作插曲。
